Positive Encouragement & Support: Lessons from The Gruffalo Trail

Nick Fewings Gruffalo 1

Recently, my wife and I had our two grandchildren, 5 & 3, stay with us for a few days. One of the activities we took them to was The Gruffalo Spotters Trail at a country park near us.

Nick Fewings Gruffalo 3The trail is about a mile long and you solve clues to find 5 characters from the book. When you do, using a free virtual reality app, you can take photos of them with the kids appearing to be with them. An amazing idea that our grandchildren loved.

Afterwards, I reflected on some of the phrases that I’d used:

Wow, how did you find that clue?

I’m here to help you if you need me.

Amazing. Would you do anything differently next time?

Fantastic, you both helped each other to solve that.

There you go, it wasn’t as bad as you thought. What have you learnt to help you solve the next clue?

Well done.

Would you like me to show you what you have to do?

You’re doing really well, we’re almost there.

Yay, you’ve done it, high fives and time for an ice-cream.

Nick Fewings Gruffalo 2It was wonderful to see how proud they were of their achievements and it got me thinking. I wonder how much of a positive impact it would have if there was more genuine encouragement, support and motivation in teams and organisations? After all, it cost me nothing more than my time and breath.

What do you think?  Let me know in the comments box below.

Wishing you continued success and happiness in both work and life.

Yours behaviourally, Nick
